Customized Colorado License Plate
When an old stockade fence is torn down, it is destined for the landfill unless your someone like me. I repurpose these slats for wall hangings.
I have created several wall hangings with the slats, using images I’ve created from graphic made from pictures of old signs on West Colfax.
But here I’m focusing on wall hangings that use the image of the Colorado license plate. I’ve created a template that allows me to customize the wording to just about anything you want (though there is a limit of about 10 letters due to size). I can also build the wall hanging to varying size depending on the space you have.
Here’s how I do it: I obtain the fence slats and then prep them for usage. I rip down both sides so they fit together better, brush it down with a wire brush to clean it up a bit.
I create a frame using 1′ x 4′ boards obtained from a locally owned lumber yard and connect them using pocket screws.
I cut down the slats to length and then attach them to the frame. I then give it a light sanding to prevent splinters, but keep some of the texture. Then I use a jigsaw to give it rounded corners.
After painting the whole piece with the design, I hit it again with a power sander to give it a weathered look. I attached a heavy duty hanger to the back.
I can coat it in a couple layers of exterior polyurethane for a an additional $50 if you want to use it outdoors.
